Romanian banks enjoy accelerated growth

The entire Alpha group's net profits for H1 increased by 48.8 percent, amounting to €454 million, mainly from banking activities in Greece, but also from a significant increase in the bank's Southeastern European subsidiaries. Compared to H1 2006, the bank's operational income increased by 16.4 percent, to some €954 million. An important contribution was a 14.8 percent increase in income generated by tariffs and commissions, owing to extended operations on the consumer loan market. The extension process increased operational expenses by 12.4 percent for the entire group, with the highest such raise of 27.1 percent in Southeastern Europe, where 96 new branches were open.

In June, the bank's assets amounted to €44 billion, while deposits in Southeastern Europe rose by 35 percent, to some €4.3 billion. Earning before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) by June 2007 increased by 31.4 percent year-on-year, to some €243 million. In Romania, the Alpha Bank Group owns companies Alpha Finance, Alpha Advisory, Alpha Leasing IFN and Alpha Insurance Brokers.

Another Greek group, EFG Eurobank Ergasias SA, main Bancpost shareholder, increased its operational profits generated by its Romanian branch by 55 percent, compared to H1 2006, to some €109.1 million, according to a company report. Moreover, the company's profits doubled, amounting to €7.6 million. . The group's net profits increased by 31 percent, reaching some €416.7 million, while operational profits rose by 22.6 percent (€1.34 billion). A four-fold increase was registered on the Romanian, Bulgarian, Serbian and Turkish markets.

MKB Romexterra Bank, a MKB-Bayern LB subsidiary, had net profits of €3.8 million in H1 (according to international accounting standards), following investments in structural development and rebranding. The retail segment increased most rapidly, by 109 percent, topping corporate banking, which rose by 60 percent.
