Not even the tabloids, the favorites of readers, escaped the decline in sales, together with the sports and quality newspapers, while business dailies managed to attract more buyers, according to data provided by the Romanian bureau for auditing the number of copies (BRAT).
The newspaper market has a new leader as of the first half of 2009. With average sales of 212,737 copies per edition, up more than 73 percent year-on-year, Click! managed to surpass Libertatea, that was market leader in the previous years. Through massive investments in constant marketing campaigns and editorial development, Click! is now the most sought-after Romanian newspaper since as early as February and maintained its position throughout the first half of 2009.
The “Biblioteca pentru Toţi” collection did not result in a spectacular increase in the sales of the Jurnalul National daily, but slowed the decline compared to 2008. Not even the DVDs and books distributed with Romania libera managed to boost sales, which fell to an average 48,754 copies. On the other hand, Adevarul has more than tripled its sales, to 95,657 copies, expanding its insert portfolio with DVDs with movies and documentaries, as well as children’s books.
On the back of a rising interest in the effects of the crisis, business newspapers had a better evolution than the rest of the market. Ziarul Financiar sold on average 15,781 copies, a level similar to that registered last year, while Business Standard sold 10,975 copies, up 65 percent.
