“This is our chance to expand. When this opportunity presents itself, we will seize it,” said Wiener Boerse’s Chief Executive Officer, Heinrich Schaller, quoted by the NewsIn agency. He indicated Romania, Croatia, Serbia, and Bulgaria as main acquisition targets.
According to the official, Wiener Boerse hopes to take over share packages in stock markets in Eastern and Southeastern Europe in the coming three-five years, considering that the stock exchange operator already has significant participations in the Budapest, Prague, and Ljubljana stock markets.
“The Vienna stock exchange is interested in cooperating with stock markets in Central and Eastern Europe, and we maintain our strategic interest in acquiring participations on these markets. However, at present, we are not in talks for these acquisitions,” Wiener Boerse officials told Business Standard.
Wiener Boerse, founded in 1771, had a capitalization exceeding €64 billion at the end of June, over three times more than that of the Bucharest Stock Exchange.
