“2008 was an exceptional year, all products registered high increases,” the Managing Partner of BDG Import, Petru Berciu, told Business Standard. The company official is optimistic about 2009. He is counting on a 20 percent increase in business, considering the economic recession and high prices applied to alcoholic drinks as of 1 February.
“Normally, if it was not for the crisis, the rise should be of 40-50 percent. But, except the crisis, we are considering a hike in prices on the alcoholic beverage segment. BDG raised prices 16-19 percent in February, due to the fluctuations of the exchange rate, and the 1-2 percent increase applied by producers at the beginning of every year,” Berciu added.
The company’s portfolio includes the Jack Daniel’s whisky, the Cutty Shark scotch, the Finlandia vodka, the Corona beer, the Evian water, the Laurent Perrier champagne, and Jagermeister liqueur.
“Jagermeister registered a 250 percent annual increase in sold volume in 2008. The evolution was better than the main product distributed by BDG, the Jack Daniel’s whisky, which totaled sales of €16 million in 2008, which translates into a rise of over 60 percent,” said Berciu.
