This is the third consecutive day in which the national currency plunges to a historical minimum, after reaching 4.3257 lei per euro on Monday and 4.3523 lei per euro on Tuesday.

BNR's reference level for the U.S. dollar eased 0.22 percent to 3.5617 lei per dollar, from the historical peak of 3.5697 in the previous session.

However, analysts deem the leu's decline will temper and that the exchange rate will recover.

On the international market, the dollar lost ground from 1.2187 per euro on opening to 1.2293 around 1:30 p.m. Romania's hour.

Overnight interests slipped slightly and frame the key interest rate of 6.25 percent a year.

BNR posted an average interbank bid rate (ROBID) of 5.93 percent a year, down from 5.96 percent in the previous session, and an interbank offer rate for overnight deposits (ROBOR) of 6.43 percent, below the previous 6.46 percent.
