BNR: Some banks got scared, they switched to the opposite extreme

“They hit the brakes more brutally than they hit the gas pedal, some were scared. We did our duty and applied sanctions. The speed did not adjust. We cannot valuate the impact of this slowdown on the economy,” said the Governor of the National Bank of Romania (BNR), Mugur Isarescu.

The caution of bankers slowed lending, and the shareholders of lenders are seeking for solutions, to attract foreign funds and internal resources.

Six European banks, including UniCredit, Societe Generale, Erste, and Raiffeisen (which operate on the Romanian market through banks ranking in top ten lenders) are pressuring the European Union to provide financial aid to Romania and other countries in Eastern Europe, according to the Bloomberg news agency.
