BVB plans to expand regionally

Although capital markets are undergoing a crisis, BVB had discussions with both investors interested in the local market and smaller stock exchanges seeking for partnerships.

“This proves the Romanian market has a significant growth potential, which is appreciated by other stock markets,” Farmache said.

Meanwhile, BVB aims to consolidate its position by purchasing smaller stock markets in the region. The first step was made earlier this year, when BVB tried to acquire 64 percent of Slovenia’s stock exchange. “We made an offer for the Slovenian stock market at the time, but it was not finalized. However, our plans do not end here. We are eyeing other stock markets in Europe that are looking for allies,” Farmache said.

BVB registered a decline in profit in the first six months of 2008, after deals on the local capital market dropped significantly, due to the international financial turmoil.
