Consumers paying more attention to prices

Two out of five consumers are now paying more attention to prices than they did last year when deciding whether or not to acquire a product. Furthermore, price hikes have led consumers to prioritize their shopping. “Forty-nine percent of the respondents buy only products they really need, while 41 percent buy the same products [as before the crisis], but in smaller quantities,” according to the study.

Higher prices have also led to a drop in demand for snacks, soft drinks, chocolate, ice cream, and spirits, as well as for some basic products, such as coffee, bread, and meat. Products that have not been affected by the crisis, and are still being sold at the same level as in 2008 are ecological products, fruits, vegetables, milk, yogurt and baby food.
