Born in the village of Tifesti in Vrancea County, Guzu owns some 100 hectares of vineyards in the region, of which some 50 ha are currently fruit-bearing, and a fruit tree orchard. Regarding the wine variety, the range for the medium segment includes grapes such as Muscat Ottonel, Feteasca Regala, Aligote and Sauvignon-Blanc. Sagio includes Feteasca Alba and Babeasca Rose. Besides international grape varieties, Guzu counts on traditional local grapes, of which he has planted Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Neagra, Babeasca, Glabena de Odobesti, and Sarba.
Initially, Guzu’s wines will not be found in large store chains, as the production is now low and the main sales channels are traditional stores and the HoReCa network.
The businessman announced last year that he plans to invest over €7 million in a wine making complex, in the plantation of 30 ha of orchard and a fruit refrigeration warehouse. Guzu has already invested €4 mln in the wine and fruit production. The vineyards were acquired from producers in the region, and funds came from the sale of 85 percent of the dye factory’s shares.
The value of the wine market amounted to €500 mln in 2008, and its main players are Murfatlar, Jidvei, Cotnari, and Vincon. Guzu recently exited the Fabryo business, after selling the remaining 15 percent share package to the Oresa Ventures majority shareholder. Following the transaction, Guzu received a 49 percent Oresa-owned share package in the Bau Profil company, of which the businessman became majority shareholder.
