A wave of criticism and harsh measures have stormed over Romanians, mostly those living and working in Italy following the rape of a 47-year old woman by a Romanian immigrant. The victim died in hospital and was buried on October 3. The defendant claimed he only stole her purse.

An European Directive stipulates the member states can limit the freedom of movement and residence to those EU citizens and their families who endanger the public safety or health. Being incapable of self support is also a reason to send immigrants home, EC representative said. The Italian Cabinet's decision to send back home Romanians considered to be a threat to the community infuriated many of the immigrants who fear abuses may be committed.

Romanian President Traian Basescu requested yesterday the Foreign Affairs Ministry to take several measures such as sending the Italian decree on expulsion to the European Commission, establishing more consulates in Italy and creating a plan to support inclusion of the Roma community at European level.
