GDF SUEZ has over 2,000 MW worth of projects in Romania

GDF SUEZ is the owner of the largest local gas distributor, Distrigaz Sud, and of Electrabel, company involved in the construction of two thermal plants (one of 1,600 MW in Constanta, and the other of 400 MW in Galati) and a 600-1,000 MW plant in Galati for the ArcelorMittal steel producer.

The energy producer signed a memorandum with state-owned Termoelectrica electricity and thermal energy producer for the construction of a thermal plant at the company’s subsidiary in the northeastern town of Borzesti.

Electrabel won the auction organized by Termoelectrica in September for the construction of a 400 MW energy production facility in Borzesti. The investment was estimated at €300-400 million.

“We hope that the feasibility study will be completed in Q1 or Q2 2009, and the joint venture will be established. Construction work, which is expected to last 36 months, should start at the beginning of 2010, so production should begin in the plant by the end of 2012,” said Ioan Ungureanu, Termoelectrica’s General Manager.
