Infringement procedure – EC slams Romania for having a dysfunctional 112 emergency number

The European citizens who travel in the UE countries need to be able to count on the capacity of the emergency services to localize them when they make an emergency call. The EC has to make sure that the number functions properly in all EU countries, an EC official said. The commission started the infringement procedure against Romania by sending the official notification letter.

The European legislation regarding telecommunications imposes the member states to provide free access to emergency services when dialing the sole European emergency number 112. Also the member states have to guarantee that the operators of the emergency services can localize the call maker from both mobile and land phone.

A better access to the emergency services through the emergency number 112, represents a key factor of the reformation of European standards regarding telecommunications, the EC release reads. EC launched the infringement procedure against Bulgaria, Latvia and Poland for the same issue.
