External resources attracted by local banks amount to €22.8 billion, of which 90 percent is made up of financing lines from mother-banks, according to data from Romania’s National Bank (BNR).
In the past week, BNR Governor Mugur Isarescu and other officials assured the public that Romania’s banking system is not subject to any liquidity problems.
“None of the banks has any problems, as they are closely supervised. We used to complain about BNR checks. I am not complaining any longer,” said the President and General Manager of the Romanian Banking Institute (IBR), Petru Rares.
In spite of the financial turmoil, the mother banks of local lenders are not withdrawing their financing. The Raiffeisen group has not withdrawn a single euro from Romanian deposits. Alternatively, the lender continues to support Raiffeisen Bank Romania with euros for loans, according to local subsidiary President, Steven van Groningen. Raiffeisen has invested €250 million in Romania to date.
