CNADNR said a total of 2.66 billion lei are needed for next year. The Ministry of Economy and Finance granted the institution only 364 million lei. CNADNR officials told NewsIn projects such as Transylvania highway, the Bucharest – Ploiesti road section of the Bucharest – Brasov highway or the Cernavoda – Constanta road section included in the Sun Highway are financed from the state budget. The Sun Highway connects the capital Bucharest to the Black Sea port of Constanta. Transylvania highway starts from Brasov and ends in Oradea.

The national program for the construction of highways was approved in February this year and refers to the 2007 – 2013 period. The program should result in the construction of 1,800 kilometers of highway and costs amounting to 13 billion euros. Projects will be financed with money coming from structural funds, ISPA funds, European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development loans together with budget funding.

A 1.4 percent share in Romania’s total 80,000 kilometers of roads is held by highways. Some 20 percent are national roads. Romania has the lowest density of roads in EU, with a total of 33.5 kilometers per 100 square kilometers of land.
