Romanians need visas to travel, study or work in the U.S. while other Central and Eastern European countries, such as Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary, are likely to be included in the program shortly. No official steps have been taken in the case of Romania. Currently, the only country in the region that is part of the visa waiver program is Slovenia.
Bush said he “understands the frustration of Romanians” regarding visas, but avoided a direct response on a possible waiver. He added that that the U.S. Congress must change legislation in this regard.
The two officials also discussed the enlargement of NATO, an increase in the number of troops in Afghanistan, Black Sea area security, and the missile shield.
George W. Bush is in Romania to attend this week’s NATO summit.
