Yorgos Ioannidis, CEO of Romtelecom, explained for Business Standard that the investments in code division multiple access (CDMA), any of several protocols used in 2G (second-generation) and 3G (third-generation) wireless communications, will continue even if the Greek OTE group will have two such mobile communication networks in Romania, following the takeover by Cosmote of Telemobil.
“In the telecom business, frequencies are a very important asset. The more we have, the better. If we have more frequencies, we should be able to supply better mobile broadband solutions. We have the possibility of using a single channel from the two frequencies for voice, if necessary, and the rest for broadband,” added the head of Romtelecom.
Romtelecom, which has been supplying mobile data since April, recently won an important bank client with Cosmote, with monthly revenues for the two companies in excess of €100,000 for mobile voice and internet services.
Romtelecom plans to invest heavily this year in very high bit-rate Digital Line Subscriber (VDSL), the next generation DSL at super-accelerated rates, and in the development of its fiber optic network, due to demand for increased internet speed.
The company had 725,000 internet clients at the end of June.
The company’s capital expenditure exceeded €97 million in the first half of the year, according to the OTE report.
