Considering the current evolution of the weather, Poienaru forecasts a significant decline in grain production, which could make up a mere 60-70 percent of last year’s crop.
But drought is not the only problem of farmers. Due to the crisis, access to lending is very difficult. The businessman, who has 1,000 ha of energy crops, said that these could be the big chance for Romania’s agriculture, because the profit per hectare is a “minimum €700,” compared to some €100 normally for traditional crops.
