The state budget will allocate RON 12.5 mln (€3.3 mln), while local budgets will provide the remaining funds, according to the ordinance approved by the Government on Monday.
Teachers in the pre-university system with high salaries will benefit from a 3 percent rise, while those with more than RON 630 (some €168) will be granted a 28 percent increase in salary. One third of these funds will be given in March and the other two thirds in September 2009.
Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu said that the average 10 percent salary increase included in the 2009 draft budget will not be exceeded in order to ensure Romania’s macroeconomic stability.
“This offer means that Prime Minister Tariceanu thinks we are fools, but we remind him that some 80 percent of teachers have higher education,” said Gheorghe Isvoranu, President of the Spiru Haret Federation.
