– „Nici o presiune”?!

Jean Claude mi-a spus că nu-i place conceptul.

Le-a plăcut fotbalul.

XAVIER DIETLIN: „The amount of money people pay for a watch is incredible and nobody knows for sure why they are paying so much”

I met Xavier Dietlin at Albini Prassa showroom here, in Bucharest, and we were introduced by Ion Schiau. He has a very interesting story starting with a football career that ended because he wasn’t passionate enough and reaching that point where Dietlin can say that he has everything in life. A man and his passion for fulfilling the desires of his inner child cand really transform the industry of the watches.

We can know where we’re going just after we understand where we came from”

– Your family has a great history and maybe that’s why you just felt like doing something greater than your ancestors. Is it true that the stairs in the Eiffel Tower are made by your family?
That’s… almost true. It’s not The Eiffel Tower, but Musée d’Orsay – La Gare d’Orsay. But they were built in the same period, in the 1900… So it was my grand-grandfather who worked for Paris because they had to find artisans very far from Paris in that time. And the French went into the Jura Mountains – where we were – to find all the artisans to make the things possible. And for Gare d’Orsay they put many artisans together to make an incredible thing. The timing was really short… The stairs stayed in the garage for maybe 80 years. Nobody cared about them and suddenly I discovered them and I asked my father „what are those?”… I had the old picture from Gare D’Orsay and I could see them! After this I put the stairs outside the workshop just to remember where we came from. Becauseit’s really important to know this and the story is amazing. We can know where we’re going just after we understand where we came from.

– What is your favorite first memory regarding this family tradition?
From when I was 10 I just remember my father working night and day because the company was really small and I was fascinated just by seeing my name on the tag on the building – „Dietlin”. I was just fascinated by that. For me it was incredible that my father had his own company.

 – But back then, that was the name of a company. Now it’s the name of an artist and of course it remained the name of a company, too. Do you think that you are that very first one in your family with this artistic approach?
Yeah.Maybe the artistic approachis stronger today, but there’s a history behind and there are many years to come. Maybe what I changed is that I did the things especially for me. I don’t care about my customers. And most of the time I need to surprised myself. I took the freedom to do what I love.

„The most important thing is to do what you love

– Is this the nicest form of egoism?
Yes… you see, maybe this is the difference between me and my father – my father founded the company and back then it was important just to fulfill the basic needs like the food. What has changed is that today I need to be passionate about it. And I need to be free by doing exactly what I want. Even if it is never „exactly” because I still have to listen to my clients. I often say to my kids that the most important thing is to do what you love.

– You loved this part of the business. When you were old enough to decide for your future, you chose to go ahead and invest in this activity. You could do something else…
But I didn’t…

– You felt like it was your responsibility to invest in this field?
No. I think I never have chosen my way exactly because my father had his own company and it was my responsibility to come back to the family business and bring it to another level. So it was not really a choice. When you are in the family, you have to be there when needed. And this I try to do differently for my kids: I told them that they can do what I’m doing and they can choose my company but only if they are passionate about it. It is not an obligation.

„I took a lot of risks”

– And do you feel that they will choose your company?
Yes, they will. They chose the company, but freely. For me it was different, I didn’t feel that I could choose freely. I had a big pressure to take the company and I wasn’t really free, but I changed a lot of things.

– How old were you when you took the company?
26.

– Not even 30… Did you have a strategy? Was helpful the courage of youth?
Yes… I love to take risks and honestly I do not care what people think. I am really determined in this philosophy of life. Each and every one has an opinion and that’s why, for me, the opinion of somebody is not very important. I do what I love and if you love it, too, I am happy and I thank you very much. If you don’t – it’s your choice that has nothing to do with mine. And when you want to surprise people, you have to take risks. And I took a lot of risks! A lot of risks with the brands! Because when I came with the idea to exhibit the product in free access, the brands told me I was totally crazy.

– Why? Because they were afraid that somebody could steal or damage the watches?
I don’t think this was the first concern. I think they were afraid because it is a traditional industry, a very old one. There are old mentalities and the brands don’t want to change anything because they get a hard time in understanding that the World is changing all the time and one has to live in the present. You don’t have to sell your soul to the devil… there are limits, but you have to be flexible. And in this industry people don’t want changes. I just met the right people in the right time – Jean Claude Biver for example. He is one of the big bosses who wanted to do great things. And I am the man for that.

– But in your background, do you have a degree in Art?
No. Nothing.

„Everything is about feeling”

– So you are just very instinctual.
Yes, everything is about feeling. Everything!

– And how comes that you got into this context – working with the most important brands? Was it hardworking… luck… destiny… good networking?
A bit of them all. I don’t think it’s a change because I worked a lot for that. I took a lot of risks… Maybe my chance was that I met Jean Claude Biver. Suddenly.

– How did you met him?
I did an exhibition for various brands. I was doing normal showcases, design… I met him at this exhibition and the feeling was really strong. He gave me a white card: „Do whatever you want! I just want you to surprise people”. He was my angel. I call him an angel because it was like this: suddenly one guy, very powerful gave me freedom to do whatever I feel. Success was the only condition. It didn’t matter how much it cost.

– „No pressure”?!
There was, indeed, a lot of pressure. Because when I opened the Hublot booth I really felt it. People learned how to come closer, step by step. It was a lot of pressure because the one who hired me asked for just one thing: success… Maybe it is not so difficult to achieve success. There is a recipe for success.

– Is there?
I think there is!

– And you know it!?
Yeah. You know it, too.

– Do I?
The recipe is this: people love surprises and you have to find their inner child. That’s the child you have to surprise! The little inner child of only 10 years old. Al the inner children love to dream, to wonder… That’s the goal: surprise those kids! When you listen to them, you have the recipe!

– I think that if you have to explain it, it’s not art! That’s why I think you’re right. Art is when it makes you feel, without other explanations.
Exactly. Children cannot explain intellectually. They just feel. When I plan an exhibition for a customer, I like to think at him as a child. That’s why everything becomes tools for dreams.

– You „invented” this free access to the objects. It’s already your trademark. It is so well known and linked to your name that it could risk not to be a surprise anymore. What is there to invent to keep your originality?
I think in my case „more”dependson the times I’m creating. For now I love secret cabinets. The cubes, the glass cubes. You do not know for sure what it is. It could be a sculpture but not just that. You do not know how to open it, you do not know if it has a code… Suddenly it opens, and you have to find out what is the key the mechanism that offers you free access to a certain exhibit. I did this in Geneva – a meteorite 2m high that you know nothing about defining it. In this experience you have smoke, sound, a lot of fancy details.

– How „free” is the access? Maybe someone wants to touch the product. Is it allowed?
You cannot take the piece away. When I say „free”it’s not something about touching. The idea is about „no frontiers”nothing between you and the product. When you are a VIP, you have to feel that everything is open for you. For you, the one invited in the experience. In the luxury brands strategy, it was the opposite: everything was closed. When you enter a showroom, somebody comes and they ask you seriously „May I help you?”The employees of that brand look at your clothes to see if you have money or not, to see if you can afford the product. Everything there protects the project. With me, it is the opposite.  I do not like prisons. And when you put a glass in front of an object, you are making a prison for it. My goal is to break the rules and to bring everything up, aligned to people’s emotions.

– Speaking about emotions – what you are doing is now evolving thanks to the technology. Do you feel the need to involve also human interaction in your installation?
I don’t like technology so much. You would be surprised if you would come into my workshop and my house. My house is from 1929 and everything in it it’s old. My furniture is made of wood. When I listen to music it’s old music… I am old fashioned, really. I hate technology as a main character. But for me technology is a tool. Technology makes dreams possible. If I want to surprise people, I need technology. What I am trying to do is to use technology for reveling humanity. I mean the key for those secret cabinets are very warm – like a touch or a gesture. But the interaction between the exhibit and its viewer has to be done by technology. And the technology remains backstage – you never know what made the dreams possible. Technology doesn’t matter to the viewer. He doesn’t have to know what is behind.

– Is the artificial intelligence the next step?
The AI it’s a bit dangerous… I love working with people. I cherish human relationships and I cannot imagine a world without those. I guess I do not want to work with Artificial Intelligence unless it’s a tool. It’s impossible to reproduce the emotions.

On 44mm you can tell a novel”

– You work only with watches?
Not only. Also with jewelry, alcohol… I am very familiar with the industry of watches and it is much easier for me to work there. A watch is just a small piece, but it can tell a lot! On 40mm you cand write a novel!

– Are you dictating any trends in this industry?
A bit. But I could appear as arrogant because my company is not so big. We are 10-12 people. And I do not want to change this dimension. I want to create showcases; I do not want to manage people. And I don’t love money so much…

– What’s there written on your business card? Are you a businessman or an artist?
On the business card it’s just my name. (N.E.: Laughing!) It is difficult to say what I am because I am a manager, of course, but I don’t want to create gaps in my team. I don’t love the words that explain what I am doing.

– Your wife is… your counselor. (N.E.: Laughing!)
Yes!

– You already told me that you don’t care so much what other people say, but I understand that you trust very much your wife.
I am fascinated by Woman. Now. By Femineity. Because I do not have certainties in that. I try to learn. I am expert in what men want, what they like, I know that. We are stupid people, not so poetical. The woman’s complexity is just new for me. Along with this „new wife” I discovered „new universes”.

– Maybe it’s just the emotion of having a filter, now… Like on social media, you are looking at everything from another point of view.
Maybe.

– Maybe it’s just love. Maybe that’s what being in love means.
Yes! I think so! But is more by being in love with a woman – here. I am just fascinated by Femineity, today. I am 54 and suddenly comes the femineity. I knew what it was, but I’ve never explored it. For me it’s new and I am fascinated!

– So, your wife is the modern kind of muse.
I think so. I think she is a muse. Because everything is about her.

– Do you think that people in this industry are afraid of your ideas?
Yes. They are afraid to change, to take risks. They do not have the recipe for explaining why people buy watches that cost thousands of euros. The amount of money people pay for a watch is incredible and nobody knows for sure why they are paying so much. That is why people are afraid to change anything.

– But also do leaders fear that you could turn a trend and they could lose customers?
Absolutely. I remember I presented something about my concept to Jean Claude Biver. It was a meeting with 20 people. Jean Claude told me that he doesn’t love the concept. I answered that I wasn’t doing the concept for him, but for his customers. My target wasn’t him, but his customers.  „Just do it! But I hope for you that you will have success”, he told me. And I had success. It’s the final customer that matters in business. I do not care what brands think – people there come from different industries. I don’t like marketing, I like emotions. Marketing and emotions don’t work together. You have to tell incredible stories. For example, a visit in my workshop takes 2 hours because I do not present just the cases, I speak also about things from behind the scenes. It takes time to make a passionate story, to keep all the nuances.

– Is this your first experience in Romania?
Yes.It’s my first time here. I have already worked with Ion Schiau from Albini Prassa for 3 or 4 years now. I came here 30 years ago as a football player. But everything changed. I said to my wife: „Just imagine that 30 years ago it was a dictator here, everything was closed” …

– We had a kind of glass… And now we are glass-free, like your cases…
Yes, indeed! It’s exactly like that!

– Why did you quit the footballer career?
Because I think football wasn’t for me.

– Were you mediocre in football?
On one hand. On the other hand, I think it’s impossible for me to play football all the time. When you are competing, you have to speak football, eat football, read football… Everything is about football. Yesterday I met a football player here. They only have football. And for me that’s impossible. For me life is much more complicated. I love visiting museums, going to museums… I also said to my kids: „Just be curious! Try to discover things” But in football, if you want to play better, you have to do only football.

– Do you still play football for fun?
Not even. I am too old for that. And you know what? I think it wasn’t a passion.

– But why did you choose it?
Because it was a dream. A dream for success both for me and my parents. They loved football. And, as a kid, you do everything for your parents. And that’s not really right.

– The only accessory you have is a bracelet.
Made by my niece. With the name of my wife and mine.

– A lovely gift for your inner child! I was expecting you to have an expensive watch.
Yes! Indeed. See, I am wearing only this. No other accessories. Maybe is thanks to my age. I don’t need anything today to prove anything. I don’t need a tattoo to prove that I am strong. I don’t need watches to say that I have money or success. I usually wear my weeding ring and nothing else. That comes with age and life experience. My kids, for example, like most of their generation, need to show-off, to tell people how strong they are. I don’t.

– Your age is perfect for enjoying life. You are relaxed, you have success, money, love… What else do you want?
I think I have everything and my goal is to keep things as they are.

– Are you the happiest man alive?
I think I am really lucky to do what I love, to choose the way I choose. Today I’m the man I wanted to be when I was just a little boy. My inner child is happy and proud. I make a lot of mistakes, but that’s life!
