Only 30.5 percent of urban inhabitants own an MP3 player, while 63.5 percent of these own a DVD player.
Brand and reputation for prompt service are the main determinants for which people opt for a certain piece of electrical or electronic equipment.
“The behavior of consumers is continually changing. In the case of phones, for example, it is not the technology that sells products, it is the lifestyle and fashion that are the main acquisition criteria for Romanians,” said Varujan Pambuccian, President of the Parliamentary Commission for Information Technology and Telecommunications.
According to the study, the life span intended for most electronic equipment extends to the moment it stops functioning for technical reasons. More than one quarter of the population surveyed owns a non-functioning piece of electrical or electronic equipment in their household, mostly because they do not know what to do with it, and the remaining 32 percent because they intend to fix it.
At the same time, more than 78 percent of the population cannot name companies who specialize in recycling.
