Romania has not yet felt the effects of the financial turmoil, but things could change if the U.S. crisis deepens, according to Croitoru. He added that the crisis is not likely to end soon, because of the U.S. loan system. "U.S. banks grant mortgages at fixed interest for the first five years, and later move to variable interest. Loans granted in 2002 are to reach this maturity in 2009. We are talking about a market of 200,000 loans, which at variable interest higher than fixed interest could affect the ability of many Americans to make their mortgage payments," Croitoru explained.

However, he went on to say that the U.S is very competitive and could find new tools to overcome this crisis.
