Vourloumis was attending an international conference organized by the National Regulatory Authority for Communications and Information Technology (ANRCTI) yesterday, the same day when EU commissioner for telecommunications, Viviane Reding, presented a project to create a European regulation authority.
"I would dissolve tomorrow any regulatory body, because the market is competitive enough already," Vourloumis said.
In his speech at yesterday's conference, OTE's CEO said that "there is a sudden change from tolerance to a dictatorial, Napoleon-style attitude" in telecom. OTE owns a significant share package in landline operator Romtelecom and mobile phone operator Cosmote in , ranking third in this sector.
In his opening address at the conference ANRCTI's President, Dan Georgescu, criticized two other mobile phone operators, the largest in the country, Vodafone and Orange. Georgescu added said “they have noticed that the level of competition in terms of mobile telephony is low, and there are indications that an investigation might be opportune regarding a possible collective dominant position of the two large operators."
Orange and Vodafone reacted immediately to Georgescu's speech. "Orange is open to any debate, but we feel it would be more useful if we refrained from manipulating concepts that are merely opinions," Orange 's Commercial Director, Thierry Milet, said. The General Manager of Vodafone's Central and Eastern European Division, Ian Gray, said "the two operators' positions are the result of funds invested in the development of infrastructure, a process that has supported 's economic growth."
