“Due to his experience in Southeastern Europe and two years in Romania, E.ON will appoint Schubert to a similar position in the Bulgarian company,” according to quoted sources, who also added that the decision is due to be approved by the company’s board, and his replacement has not yet been named. E.ON Energie Romania officials have not confirmed this information.
Gunther Schubert also currently serves as Deputy General Manager of E.ON Gaz Romania Holding, which operates on the natural gas market, a position he will also give up with the move to Bulgaria.
During his Romanian stint, Schubert expressed his disfavor of the government’s intention to create a vertically integrated energy company, indicating that this measure would be a “step backwards,” and a move that is in contradiction to the present European current to break up major state-controlled groups.
Schubert was appointed to head E.ON Energie AG in Romania in summer 2006, and when the distribution and supply activities of E.ON Moldova (former Electrica Moldova) were split in July 2007, he took over as Chairman of the Board of Directors of E.ON Moldova Furnizare. This was followed by his appointment as Chairman of the Board of E.ON Energie Romania, a holding-type company established to provide the management of E.ON Moldova Furnizare and E.ON Moldova Distributie, and coordinate the development of the Romanian electricity group, for the latter alone spending over €60 million.
