The transaction involves the acquisition of the total share package of LaDorna, the third-largest domestic dairy producer after Dutch Friesland and French Danone, and is valued by industry sources to be worth €80-100 million. The calculations take into account the very high growth perspective of the market, with local consumption at a mere 25-33 percent of European consumption. Valvis is direct owner of a 78 percent stake in Dorna SA and 15.7 percent of Dorna Lactate shares, the two main companies of the LaDorna group. Dorna Lactate is controlled by the Cyprus-registered Nadorin Holding investment vehicle, reputed to be owned by Jean Valvis.
Lactalis, whose turnover in 2007 amounted to €9.7 billion, is a business owned by the Besnier family, one of the richest families in France. The company, established in 1933, maker of the famous Camembert President brand, has expanded its international presence strongly in the past decade, including in Central and Eastern Europe. In order to come onto the Romanian market, Lactalis also considered the acquisition of Prodlacta Brasov.
