Intel Capital, the investment division of Intel Corporation, the world’s largest processor maker, recently appointed its direct representative in Romania, in the person of Dan Lupu, to manage Intel Capital investments in Romania, Bulgaria, and states of former Yugoslavia.
"I have already had a series of meetings with several Romanian software companies, to explore collaboration possibilities," Lupu told Business Standard, adding that his objective is to select companies developing relevant technologies for IT evolution. The fact that a Romanian is now representing Intel Capital in Romania is another confirmation that the software industry has long surpassed its pioneer phase. More and more companies are developing interesting and attractive products and technologies for Western investors.
Marcin Hejka, Investment Manager of Intel Capital, said the decision regarding Lupu was made on the basis of great potential on the Romanian market. “Dan Lupu does not have a specific budget, but rather a predefined selection criteria, since Intel focusses more on relevance and potential of a company which it decides to invest in,” Hejka told Business Standard.
Regarding the information according to which Intel Capital might withdraw from the Siveco software solution provider, Hejka, who represented Intel in the Siveco transaction explained: “It is just an unfounded rumor which I cannot comment on in any way because of the restriction imposed by Intel’s communication policy. What I can say is that this is just a rumor.” Intel bought a 10 percent Siveco share package for $12 million (€8.79 mln) in 2005.
Intel Capital has invested over $6 bln (€4.39 bln) in more than 1,000 companies worldwide in the past 15 years. Of the 1,000 companies, 180 were taken over by other enterprises and 155 were listed on various stock exchanges. Intel Capital has invested $1.07 bln (€0.78 bln) in 163 companies in 2006, and 60 percent of that investment has been infused into companies outside Intel’s U.S. homebase.
