“Because the prices are in euro, and most Romanians have salaries in lei, the euro prices have to be adjusted by agencies through negotiations with their partners. The current target of agencies is to increase the number of clients, to maintain revenues at a reasonable level,” said the spokesman of the National Association of Travel Agencies in Romania (ANAT), Traian Badulescu.
Thus, increasing the number of clients would bring similar revenues, because, although the value of a transaction is lower, their number would rise, considering the depreciation of the leu continues, and clients direct themselves mainly toward less expensive offers. “Agencies just want to survive now, they no longer target profit,” Badulescu added.
The owner of World Travel agency, Nicolae Demetriade, said that the effect of the depreciation of the leu against the euro is the fact that Romanian tourists will only leave for a weekend, or go for other holiday services.
