“The activity of the Jucu factory is not affected by financial results registered by Nokia. We are continuing to assemble mobile devices here, to meet demand, and are also continuing to develop the factory. We wish to finalize the investment in Romania, so things are going according to the company’s plans and in line with the economic context,” John Guerry, Managing Director of Nokia Cluj Operations, told Business Standard.
The operating profit of the Finnish Nokia group dropped 96 percent in the first quarter of 2009, to €55 million, considering the unstable economic context, and the company announced global layoffs of 4,000 employees this year alone, said company officials.
Nokia produced one million devices at Jucu in three months since production began. The company produced some 10 million mobile devices in Romania by October 2008, destined for the medium segment, delivered to various European countries.
“We started with entry-level devices, and then added phones destined for the medium segment, such as the Nokia 6300. This is clear proof that the Jucu factory is developing and will continue to develop,” said Guerry. The total investment in the Jucu factory is estimated at €60 mln, and was initiated in July 2007.
